When opening this cookbook for the first time, I half expected Gordon Ramsay to start yelling at me. "Just close the book! You can't cook anything, you donkey!" Thankfully, this cookbook shows Gordon's softer side and is chock full of very approachable recipes and advice. I was excited to see a "Working Lunches" section in this book, especially since winter vacation was winding down. With the inevitable return to work comes the daily stressful, anxiety-filled, dilemma that leaves me sneaking out the door "forgetting" my lunchbox - what to make for lunch?! Just thinking about it leaves me in a cold sweat...
Anyone who has watched Kitchen Nightmares knows that Gordon Ramsay appreciates quality ingredients treated simply. The lunches featured in Gordon Ramsay's Fast Food fit the bill with minimal complicated prep and maximum yummy flavor! A recent and inexplicable yearning for bagels made Ramsay's "Pastrami & cream cheese bagel" seem simply irresistible. Time to get toasty!
The Fixins (to serve 2):
- 2 bagels (Ramsay calls for poppyseed, but I used everything bagels)
- 3 1/2 oz cream cheese
- 1 Tbs whole grain mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 6 slices pastrami
- 1 sliced pickle (I used pre-sliced bread and butter pickles)
- 1 small bunch of arugula
Result:
Don't you just want to scoop up that little pile of cream cheese with your finger and stick in your mouth? Just me? Right. The flavors of this simple sandwich are so harmonious. The mustard adds so much complexity to the cream cheese. The pastrami's salty bite is tempered by the pickle's sweetness. The peppery arugula adds just enough kick without being spicy. All piled atop my favorite bagel? Yes, please!
Repeat:
Yes, rest assured that this recipe has found a place on the lunch rotation. It is a tasty, sophisticated fall back in the event that I'm feeling lazy in the morning but yet, had the forethought on the weekend to stock up all of these goodies just in case. It's really nice to have a thoughtful lunch every once and a while - to feel like I'm being nourished in the middle of my work day instead of just getting by with whatever container of leftovers I threw in my bag. This lunch hits the spot, and I hope you'll try it!
What is your favorite go-to lunch?
I came across EMW, Novanym, Namebase, to name a few. I found their websites very informative. But when it came to ingenuity and creativeness, I will definitely go with the first site mentioned.site
